Aadhaar card is heavily pushed by government as the main document for one's identity. While applying for Aadhaar an individual needs to provide his personal details along with fingerprints and iris (eye) scan data. Biometirc data includes fingerprints and iris scan data. This biometric data is being used for authentication to avail services like filling tax returns, opening bank accounts, buying SIM card and also to get money.
When you buy a SIM card you provide your Aadhaar no to the telecom representative, he enters it in the Aadhaar-based authentication system. Next, in order to access your KYC details you have to authenticate yourself using your fingerprint. If the fingerprint scanned at the device matches with the one in the Aadhaar database, it is considered to be an approval from you and your KYC details are shared with the telecom company. This avoids the necessity of submitting physical documents, thereby eliminating the misuse of your physical documents.
There have been instances reported of Aadhar data being leaked, so far there has been no report about the biometric data of Aadhaar holders being compromised. Here, i will tell you how you can lock/unlock your biometric data to be sure that it is not being misused. Step1
Go to site "https://resident.uidai.gov.in/biometric-lock".
Step2
Enter the Aadhar No and captha. Click on "Send OTP". Once you do this you get the confirmation message below "Send OTP" button.
Step3
After submitting details you will get the OTP. Enter OTP and click on "Login" button.
Step4
By default your locking system is disabled. You first need to enable it to lock it. It may look like this.
Step5
Enter the security code and click on "Enable" button. It may take some time. For some users it may take endless time and never show next page. To confirm whether your biometric is enabled or not you can repeat Step1 to Step3.
Step6
If you previous request (as in Step4) is placed successfully you will see below screen.
Step7
Default is locked. If you want to Unlock or disable it again you can do it as seen above. If you choose to unlock it then it will be unlocked temporary and will be locked automatically after that.
