When you purchase any good or take any service we pay Goods and Service Tax, GST on it. A question comes to our mind, are we actually paying tax to the government or to the owner of store? Here is a guide to identify whether GSTIN number is fake or not.

What is GSTIN number?

GSTIN is a 15 digit unique code which will be assigned to each taxpayer, which will be State-wise and PAN-based. You can check the GSTIN number for the below structure. If the structure is not same as defined below than you can be for sure that it is fake.

As you see in the image above GSTIN number is a 15 digit code with below format -

  • The first two digits of GSTIN represent the state code. To get the state code you can check this link - "State Code"
  • Next 10 digits represent the PAN number of a business entity like your shop, mall or company.
  • 13th digit indicates the number of registrations as a business entity has within a state for the same PAN. It will be an alpha-numeric number (first 1-9 and then A-Z) and will be assigned on the basis of the number of registrations a legal entity (having the same PAN) has within one state.
  • 14th digit is by defualt 'Z'.
  • The last digit will be a check code which will be used for detection of errors.
